About
UnMonumental is a collaborative project by artists James Tylor and Matt Chun. We write stories from the history of Australia Aboriginal Land, illustrated with original drawings. Since 2020, we have also developed The UnMonumental Style Guide: our unique methodology for the use of written English.
UnMonumental has previously featured in Sydney Living Museums, Cordite Magazine, Bargoona Nganjin North Fitzroy Library, Richard Bell’s Tent Embassy, and Sydney Opera House. James and Matt also co-authored The Pull it Down Reader, published in 2024 by Slingshot Books.
We remain creatively and editorially independent.
James Tylor is a multidisciplinary artist and writer of Kaurna, Māori, and European family. He writes about environment, culture and history.
Matt Chun is an artist, writer and picture book creator of Chinese and European family. He is a founding co-editor of anti-imperialist print periodical The Sunday Paper.
